The Stamford Photography Club’s 2018-2019 season started off with a bang, as three images in our September Photo Competition earned perfect scores of 27 from our three judges for the evening’s event.  The three images are highlighted below, along with a short description of the photograph by the maker:

Solitude by Rosemarie Consunji – Black & White Print Open Subject Class Salon

Solitude_RConsunjiI took this image in the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, Queens, NY. This is the cafe that one sees upon entering the museum. The scene struck me because most everything in it was a shade of white with the exception of a lone woman wearing black sitting on one of the tables. I liked how the leafless trees in the background created contrast and added texture to the scene. Hence, I thought it would make a good composition in black and white. ~Rosemarie

Show Me the Way by Steven Labkoff – Color Print Open Subject Class Salon

Labkoff Steven Show Me the Way“Show Me the Way” was shot at 11:30PM on July 19, 2018 at Two Lights State Park in Cape Elizabeth, Maine.  In order to capture this image, a friend and I had to hike up into a field below the lighthouse to get the shot organized.  I lined up the Milky Way so that the Lighthouse and the Milky Way were both in frame.  That particular weekend in Maine was particularly clear (a rarity for summertime shooting) with very low humidity, allowing for wonderful skies.  In addition, the moon was in first quarter phase and was setting behind us (off camera), which nicely lit the house and light house, but was so low that it did not interfere with the Milky Way capture.  This was a single frame shot – no compositing was done.  The image was processed using a combination of LightRoom and Photoshop.  I did use a new technique called Luminosity Masking and a tool called Lumenzia by Greg Benz (which helped control the lights and darks) to bring down the brightness of the lighthouse (which was nearly totally burned out due to the bright moonlight).  The overall exposure was a wonderful mix of technique and great weather luck… The shot was taken with a Nikon D750 with a 17-35 f2.8 Nikor lens.  The exposure settings were 25 second exposure, f2.8 and ISO 1600.  ~Steven
