Playing_For_Pesos_SHarrisPlaying for Pesos by Sally Harris

The first time I came across this young boy playing the accordion was early on in our month-long stay in Oaxaca, Mexico.  He was sitting in front of a bright orange wall, his little body holding the giant accordion.  He was very shy and turned his head when I photographed him.  I imagined he really didn’t enjoy sitting for hours in the street playing for pesos, but his parents made him.   Weeks went by and I didn’t see him again.  Finally, close to the last day in Oaxaca, I saw him.  This time he was wearing the straw hat and sitting in front of a bright green wall.  An American stood next to him and we talked about the boy.  The man said there are many young children playing for pesos in the streets, even a few other accordion players, but this boy… this boy is the best.”  This time I knelt down and photographed him straight on at his level.  He looked up at me while I photographed him and those eyes still haunt me. ~Sally H.

Night photography is my passion.  This image was taken at a hotel called “Sukkah B’Midbar” (Hut in the Desert) in the Negev Desert of Israel.  This hut, or Sukkah, was our hotel room for the evening.  NO running water or electricity.  The shot was taken on a Nikon D750 with a 17-35mm F/2.8 lens set to 17mm and F/2. on a Manfrotto tripod for a 30 second exposure.  There is very little light pollution in the Negev, and as such, spectacular nightscapes are possible.  The RAW image was processed in Lightroom to bring out the stars and colors. ~Steven L

Digital Image of the Year

17_11_OS_S_To-Fly_Linda-BrinckerhofflTo Fly by Linda Brinckerhoff

“To Fly” is a portrait of my 8 year old granddaughter Leah who requested a photo of herself in her Amelia Earhart Halloween costume. I used a hand painted background aand a 6 foot parabolic light modifier pointed 90 degrees away from the subject so that just the edges would light her, a technique called “feathering the light”. A fan was added to get some lift on her hair. A vignette was added with Photoshop. ~Linda B.
