SummersSquall SmallSummer Squall by Van Ruttley

This storm rolled in during a beautiful sunset on Kingsbury Beach, Cape Cod and by the time the clouds ‘grabbed’ the beach, everyone was running for cover…  The wind went from 0-60 MPH in seconds and left as quickly – leaving us all to once again enjoy the Beautiful Cape sunset. It was definitely a 2 for 1 night  for a photographer -Van

All's Quiet on the Beach Small All’s Quiet on the Beach by Mike Harris

Sally and I were with professional photographer, Richard Martin, in Cobourg, Ontario, last September. The City of Cobourg has funky sites to photograph including a wonderful architectural junkyard. In addition the city has a very wide beach sloping down to Lake Ontario. The beach is known for its Mondrian like life guard towers. For this photo I shot from low to the ground to emphasize the expanse of the beach. Sally was busy making her own photographs of the guard tower and was the human element which the scene called for. There is substantial post photograph processing. I have seen black and white beach images using very high contrast which I have liked. However, I wanted hints of color rather than straight black and white. This led me to brighten the image to the point that the sky and beach disappeared into whiteness. The guard tower and Sally remained, and I carefully brought back the subtle colors of the beach and water to give context to the image. -Mike

Digital Projected Image of the Year

Sunrise Moonrise Small Sunrise Moonrise by Chris Wisker

In the winter Greenwich Point Park opens before sunrise, sometimes during dark. Also in March 2013 there was Comet Pan-Starrs that was supposed to visible during twilight hours. Being uneducated on the fact the Comet is visible only after sunset not sunrise I took a few pictures and there was no comet visible. Stumped I sit in the car and all of a sudden I see a very thin crescent moon just above the pre-sunrise glow. Knowing that usually doesn’t happen that often I got out of the car and frantically rushed to set up my tripod and gear. Luckily on this morning I happened to bring my long lens which helped to compress the scene and zoom far enough to all the moon to be bigger. I got in 10 shots before the Moon was too high to include the water line. -Chris
