Photo Essay Night

Our annual Photo Essay contest is coming up on Wednesday 5/17/17 as part our 3rd-Wednesday Program for May. Also, that night, we’ll hold SPC’s annual business meeting which usually lasts about 30 minutes.

You don’t want to miss the Photo Essay contest, particularly if you’re new to the club this year. It’s informal and fun, and, no doubt, you’ll enjoy the show, even if you don’t submit a photo essay.

To give you some examples of photo essays, Mike Harris and I have uploaded ours from last season to SPC Photo Sharing in Facebook. See the videos section. Mike’s entry won last year. (If you haven’t joined SPC Photo Sharing, contact Rosemarie Consunji at rconsunji@gmail.com.)

See below for the the rules and the remaining scoop on SPC’s Photo Essay Contest. And let me know if you have any questions or need more info.

The Basics

“Photo essays” have various definitions. In the context of this particular program, a photo essay is…

  • A multimedia presentation–typically an automated photo slideshow.

  • Very often it includes a soundtrack of music and/or sound effects and/or your recorded voice.

  • Still and motion images are allowed.

  • Usually, there’s little to no written text, other than a title and credits and, perhaps, some brief wording, overlaying the slides, to enhance the “narrative”.

Topics

The sky’s the limit for subject matter. But themed presentations generally work better. Some ideas:

  • A collection of images you’ve been developing

  • A vacation or trip

  • A personal project

  • A non-profit you work with

Time Limit and Other Considerations

  • Your slideshow must not exceed 5 minutes.

  • You must be the person who took the images (still and motion).

  • If you use music in your soundtrack, be sure to credit the band/musician.

  • There’s no formal panel of judges… club members in attendance vote for their favorite photo essay.

  • The winning member gets bragging rights.

Technical How-To

What’s involved in creating and presenting these photo essays?

  • To create your slideshow, you need to use a “slideshow/video/photo” editing app… such as Apple Photos.

  • If you get stuck, ask around for advice and help from your fellow members. I’m happy to give you a hand.

  • Bring your own laptop for the presentation, or make arrangements with another member to share laptops.

  • Your laptop must have one of the following ports to connect to the SPC projector. SPC has the necessary cables.

VGA Port      HDMI Port           Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt Port

  • If your laptop has none of the above ports, then you’ll need to bring your own cable for your output port plus an adapter to connect your cable to the VGA port or HDMI port on SPC’s projector. If you’re not sure what you have, contact David Henkel at dhfore@hotmail.com.

After we view the Photo Essays, we will conclude with the Club Business Meeting.
