I think this was a first for the Club competition nights!  Three images in our October Club Competition achieved a perfect score of 27 from our 3 judges in attendance this evening.  And one member, Jean-Marc Bara was the recipient of 2 of those perfect scores.  The third image receiving a 27 was from Douglas Beardsley.  Here is a look at the images and the story behind the images from the photographers.

jmbps1610Peaceful Radiance by Jean-Marc Bara

I learned about Bridgeport’s Mountain Grove Cemetery in a New York Times article and decided to spend an afternoon there in mid-June (2016).  Since the cemetery closes two hours before sunset at that time of the year, and since the light was very strong that afternoon, I decided to take my infrared camera with me. I shot at the cemetery for several hours – there is a lot to see and photograph in this large and beautiful cemetery – and this one was my favorite image of the afternoon.  The title “Peaceful Radiance” describes both the atmosphere of the cemetery that day – I saw very few people while I was there – and the rendering of the light by the infrared camera.  Technical: digital camera modified for infrared photography with a 665nm filter (meaning some visible red passes through, in addition to the infrared). Processing consisted in swapping the red and blue channels and converting to B&W. ~JMB

jmb1610psThe Last Drink by Jean-Marc Bara

Last month (Sept 2016) I spent a wonderful long week in the Orkney Islands, in the northern isles of Scotland.  While on a walk I noticed a farm that looked abandoned and decided to make a detour to take a look.  Once I got to the farmhouse it became clear that it had been abandoned for quite a while.  The door had no lock and was slightly ajar, so I entered the farmhouse to explore it and ended up spending a couple of hours shooting the small rooms which still contained some objects left by the previous owners.  Two of the objects left behind were an empty green bottle of Jugermeister liqueur and a single shot glass.  These two objects served as the focus of my composition – I tried several and this one is my favorite.  Trough the window one can glimpse a little bit of the beautiful seascape surrounding this abandoned farm.  Technical:  HDR composite of 3 exposures taken with a full frame digital camera with a lens set to a 16mm focal length. ~JMB

db1610psInto the Sunset by Douglas Beardsley

As the sun sets over Vineyard Haven on Martha’s Vineyard, the schooner, Alabama, heads for home port. I’m surrounded by wood masts and iron and canvas and sturdy rope, all creaking and straining under a stiff breeze. It’s easy to imagine being a weary deck hand in the heyday of sail on the last leg of a long journey, buoyed by the comforting sight of dry land. It’s a transcendent moment–part real, part fantasy. I’m intoxicated by the miraculous light and the gorgeous summer evening and the magnificent tall ship, in concert with the sea. ~DB
